Classic Tuna Melt Sandwich (Print Version)

Crispy grilled sandwich with creamy tuna salad and melted cheese on golden bread

# What You'll Need:

→ Tuna Salad

01 - 1 (5 oz) can tuna in water, drained
02 - 2 tbsp mayonnaise
03 - 1 tsp Dijon mustard
04 - 1 small celery stalk, finely diced
05 - 1 tbsp red onion, finely diced
06 - Salt and black pepper to taste

→ Sandwich Assembly

07 - 4 slices sandwich bread (white, whole wheat, or sourdough)
08 - 1 tbsp butter, softened
09 - 4 slices Swiss or cheddar cheese
10 - 2 slices tomato (optional)

# Directions:

01 - Combine drained tuna, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, celery, and red onion in a mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly until well incorporated. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
02 - Spread softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice. This buttered side will face outward during grilling.
03 - Layer half the tuna salad on the unbuttered side of two bread slices, spreading evenly. Add tomato slices if desired, then top each with 2 cheese slices. Cover with remaining bread, buttered side facing out.
04 - Heat skillet over medium heat. Place sandwiches in pan and cook 3-4 minutes per side, pressing gently with spatula, until bread turns golden brown and cheese melts completely.
05 - Remove from heat and slice each sandwich diagonally in half. Serve immediately while hot and cheese remains melted.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • It transforms a simple can of tuna into something that feels like a warm hug on a plate
  • The way the crispy bread gives way to that creamy, cheesy center is absolutely addictive
02 -
  • Medium heat is your friend here because high heat burns the bread before the cheese has time to melt properly
  • Letting the sandwich rest for a minute before cutting prevents all that glorious cheese from oozing out too quickly
03 -
  • Drain the tuna thoroughly and even press it gently to remove excess water for the best texture
  • Use a skillet with a heavy bottom for even heat distribution and consistent browning
